Drake Will Blow Your Face Off (Quietly)

“Pensive” is not a word frequently used to describe a hip-hop record. Neither is “staid”, nor “ethereal”. All three of these descriptors could be applied to Drake‘s new LP, Take Care, sometimes simultaneously.

Take Care feels like the first time Drake has completely owned it as an artist. But — for better or worse — that doesn’t mean we’re getting any closer to determining whether he’s “a rapper who can sing R&B” or “an R&B singer who can rap”. But where early in his career that dichotomy dogged his appeal, he’s now well-enough established that it doesn’t even matter. One thing is abundantly clear, dude’s spitting with as much vim and vigor as anybody in the industry right now.

I’ve done something of a complete one-eighty on this guy, this record sounds pretty great from front to back, no small feat considering there’s 17 tracks.
