Stream Memory Tapes' new LP "Player Piano"

Daayve Hawk’s a cool guy, he manages to a be a single, stay at home dad and support himself and his son through his music.

In 2008 Dayve Hawk (as Memory Tapes) quitely released an album that transcended the chillwave surroundings from which it sprang. That album Seek Magic was gently powerful, some of the most emotive music of that year. There’s no denying the sense of nostalgia that’s transmitted through his music, but at times it still manages to delight in a decidedly modern way thanks in large part to Hawk’s production chops.

Now, after a long three years, comes the follow up Player Piano. The album scans less soaring and sentimental than its predecessor. I haven’t full digested it yet, but here’s a link to not only stream the whole thing, but read a brief track-by-track explanation by Hawk himself.

Drake can Flow

I’ve never hated on Drake. Actually that’s probably not true; it’s hard to get behind a Disney “tween” show star turned gangster rapper. And at the beginning of his career, the music was just as confusing as the concept it represented. He couldn’t decide whether he wanted to be a rapper or an R&B singer, and that indecision showed in the so-so Thank me Later. Now he’s returned with a new single, and it’s NOT for the pop chart.

“Dreams Money  Can Buy” is a statement of rejuvinated purpose. Drake’s spitting with a very clear understanding of his place in the current hip hop scene. And it shows on lines like “I just love it when niggas think they got it/And I love that that line just made ’em think about it”. Dude knows he’s rich, knows he’s talented, and knows he wants to get richer and prove his talent to everybody.
